Mental Illness and Moral Dilemmas
In a recent article in the New York Times [Sept. 12,2011], David Brooks reported on the research conducted by Christian Smith and her team in which they asked young people about ‘right and wrong, moral dilemmas and the meaning of life.’ Brooks concluded, based on this study, that ‘young people [are] groping to say anything sensible on these matters …they just don’t have the categories or vocabulary to do so.’
People suffering from mental illness and their caregivers face many moral dilemmas. They also need the language and reasoning tools to deal with moral dilemmas they face. This is apparent from the testimonials collected in the Kirby Report on recovery from mental illness. Here are some of those testimonials.
